Throughout the film, I learned a lot about the symptoms of Tourette’s syndrome, and I learned that the stereotypical portrayal of Tourette’s is far from the only example. Every person with the syndrome displays unique tics in their own way, and it can have a negative impact on their behavior and academic performance if not acknowledged. I would recommend this movie to all educators or individuals that deal with children in their profession. It is so important to understand the differences between voluntary behaviors and involuntary because children respond to the punishments they are given in negative ways.…
I was confounded, for Tourette’s syndrome was said to be excessively rare. It had an incidence, I had read, of one in a million, yet I had apparently seen three examples in an hour. I was thrown into a turmoil of bewilderment and wonder: was it possible that I had been over-looking this all the time, either not seeing such patients or vaguely dismissing them as ‘nervous’, ‘cracked’, ‘twitchy’? Was it possible that everyone had been overlooking them? What is possible that Tourette’s was not a rarity, but rather a common—a thousand times more common, say, than previously supposed?…
Please, Bill.” I started to cry. “I’ll be still. Promise!”” Sam said this after he was diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome at the age of six.…
Susan’s main areas of difficulty involve motor speech, which affects her intelligibility. Particularly relating to the larynx, use of the tongue in speech and coordination of the lips and palate. This indicates that Susan is likely experiencing mixed spastic-ataxic dysarthria due to lesions on the upper motor neurone pathway (Wilkinson and Lennox 2005) in the corticobulbar tract which innervates the cranial nerves and the cerebellum (Bethoux et al 2013). Lesions on the upper motor neurone pathway/ corticobulbar tract would typically cause the spastic symptoms that the client is showing e.g. slower rate of speech, increased muscle tone and imprecise consonants (Weismer 2006) and lesions in the cerebellum would explain the ataxic dysarthria symptoms…
What exactly is adversity? The definition in Webster’s is adverse or unfavorable fortune or fate. For me, it's being able to get through each day with Tourette’s syndrome. What exactly is Tourette Syndrome? It's a disorder that causes random spastic and normally strange movements, sounds, words, or even a combination of the three. According to Encyclopedia Britannica, it's "Tourette Syndrome is a rare inherited neurological disorder characterized by recurrent motor and phonic tics (involuntary muscle spasms and vocalizations). It is three times more prevalent in males than in females. Although the cause of Tourette syndrome is unknown, evidence suggests that there may be an abnormality of one or more chemical neurotransmitters in the brain."…
Feeling involuntary urges to blink rapidly, jerk my head, and form facial grimaces, I was not your “typical” child. My classmates would often look at me in a peculiar way, laughing at each of my spasms. I was confused, but more than ever, I felt vulnerable to the idea of being a social outcast and thought that a solitary career was my only path in life. My later diagnosis with Tourette’s Syndrome proceeded to affect all those around me, including my parents and siblings, who would take time off from their schedules to reduce my anxiety through counselling. Researching available resources to find solutions, I actively tried to fathom this puzzle of a neurological disorder and help change the social prejudice that comes with…
The condition is found more often among boys than girls (“Tourette”). It is said that about one in one hundred and sixty people can be diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome. People are usually diagnosed between the age of five to seventeen (“What”). When the patient comes to the ages of eight to twelve is when the tics may worsen (“What”). Some studies suggest that of the population is diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome.…
Prevalence Tourette syndrome does not affect just one ethnic group. The disorder affects males about three to four times more often than females. About 200,000 Americans have the most severe form of TS. Although TS can be a lifelong condition, most people with the condition experience their worst tic symptoms early in life, with improvement in late adolescence and continuing into adulthood (National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, 2012).…
