However, with help with of the Special Olympic, he was able to train and prepare for races and competition. Tony Gorczyca soon competed in a half marathon and “completed the 13.1-miles in 99 minutes and 59 seconds” (Subramanyaz). Tony Gorczyca competed the distance with a pace of 7 minutes and 37 seconds and a pace such as that is something that a normal person struggles to reach. With the Special Olympics, Tony Gorczyca was able to distinguish himself and make him a inspiration to those who also struggle with disabilities. He said “’if [Special Olympics founder Eunice Kennedy Shriver] didn't start it, most of the athletes would probably be in institutions’” (Subramanya). The Special Olympics is a beacon of inspiration that sports can help those with disabilities. Now, Tony Gorczyca does not “get nervous before these competitions anymore”
