Title IX is a civil rights law, passed on June 23, 1972 that makes it illegal to discriminate against someone based on their sex. This law is best known for the opportunities given to girls in the athletics department. Before Title IX passed, less than 32,000 women played college sports. Prior to Title IX, it was legal to expel girls from schools. There were also numerous health benefits for females under this law. Once Title IX was passed, studies were shown that the women that were fit and played sports were less depressed than those who didn’t (“Know Your IX”). If you are ever feeling discriminated against, you can go to your school counselor or your Title IX coordinator(“Know Your IX”).
Because of Title IX, more and more girls are playing sports and going to school in this generation. Most of those girls take their privileges for granted, when other women fought for this right because they wanted to have equal rights. Contrary to popular beliefs, this law is not just about sports. It is about giving equal opportunities to everyone, regardless of their gender. I think it is important to know our history, on this subject at least, so we can be thankful for the blessings we have
