Three Risk Factors

The three risk factors that we have been discussed in the class that can be contributed to the development of vulnerable populations are race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and health insurance. From the three risk factors, race/ethnicity is the common determinant of disparity and conflict. It has been a big issue in the past and it is ongoing determinant of disparity and conflict around the world today. Therefore, majority of areas around the world use race/ethnicity factors to classify the individual family traits such as skin color and cultural heritage or language. In the United State, medical and health policy often classify individual’s race/ethnicity categories as black, white, Asian, Native American, or Hispanic. Cultural competency should be used everywhere around the world to provide the best quality of care to everyone regardless of their race, religion, and socioeconomic statues; especially in health care system, education institution, and government systems. Since we are diversity country, cultural competency is essential and helpful to provide better care and services to all citizens and residents. For example, when an Asian immigrant woman with cervical cancer seek care at the cancer center, the providers and staffs of care should provide professional licensed interpreter if needed and available. Next, they should also use community health worker for home visited if needed. They should treat her equally as an English speaker although she is using interpreter. Georgetown University research reports that Black, Latinos, and Asian patients believe that they would have received a better care if they had been a different race.
