The novel is narrated by a patient in a mental institution name Chief Bromden but revolves around Randle McMurphy another patient at the institution who is out of control. Chief Bromden, who seems to be an observer gives play by play on what’s taking place in the with him, other patients, primarily Murphy the craziest of them all who has turned the mental institution into his playground. Mildred Ratched a cold-hearted cruel nurse that he later tries to strangle is the target of Randle’s hostile behavior. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest showcase two major things what goes on in mental institutions from the type of patients are admitted. First, the sentence structure is peculiar contributing to the narrator, Randle McMurphy and the characters either speak using in incomplete sentences, jargon or in odd ways. The word choice is interesting as well and that’s one of the main reasons I selected this book it’s different from anything I’ve ever read. More importantly, I looked at the time both literary works were published. This Side of Paradise was published in the Roaring Twenties and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest during the Civil Rights Movement. When deciding on what literary works that will be selected for the final project the year each novel was taking into consideration. In the 1960s, many authors began to experiment with their writing and didn’t shy away from controversial topics. All in all, when looking for books I saw the stark difference in the language during these time
