In this day and age, sound leadership is crucial. A leader is one influences others in an effort to accomplish a shared goal. There are several leadership theories which include traits, behavioral, and contingency. The traits theory of leadership assumes that leaders are born as they possess certain personalities and characteristics that make them best for leadership positions. These qualities include intelligence, self-confidence, determination, integrity, and sociability. Contrary to the trait theory, I am of the firm belief that some of these characteristics can be learned and developed through experience and human interaction. Their need for power is for a pure agenda. They hope to influence others to do what is right, as was the case of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as I previously mentioned. His hope was to influence society to treat all races fairly and get justice for the ‘black man.’ Futhermore, in referent power there is a high need for affiliation. In essence, this need is all about wanting to be liked and the desire to help others. In the hopes of being liked some leaders shy away from their morals and seemingly go ahead with the popular notion, however, this tends not to be the case with referent leaders as they usually possess a strong moral compass. Remarkably, referent leaders build relationships with followers and listen to their pleas to figure out a plan of action to make a positive change in their lives. Once the probationary period is over, if the employee worked up to par they will remain in their leadership role. Furthermore, I am of the view that the goal of any good leader is to produce other good leaders. The mindset of wanting others to be good but not better than you is wrong.
