The success of The Cat in the Hat sealed Dr Seuss’ place in children’s literature. It should be pronounced as “soice” instead of “soose,” but Dr Seuss himself switched to the…
“Books and movies are like apples and oranges. They both are fruit, but taste completely different” -Stephen King. I find that the movie paints a perfect picture well, on the other hand, reading the book you have to let your imagination take over and create images in your head of what might the scene look like. “ The cat in the hat” was a well-written book by celebrated children’s book author Dr. Seuss, originally published in 1957 and a well-developed movie directed by Bo Welch, after reading the book and watching the movie I found the movie much more entertaining than just reading the book.…
Reading and writing are the basics of school, and so Theodor Geisel planned on writing a book that could help children learn to read. The Cat in the Hat has deeply impacted children since came out in March of 1957, encouraging reading with the use of rhyming and personification. The cat is personified as a person who makes children become more engrossed with the story. It is…

Does my choice to read Star Wars novels make me better than my son who plays x-box in his free time? According to Cristina Nehring’s essay “Books make you a boring person” (New York Times, June 2004); no. Cristina Nehring has identified a perceived superior nature among people who love to read and has chosen to address the situation by employing the skills she is known for; and while she wrote a charming essay, ultimately the article fails to effect the change she was urging. As I read her essay, I got the impression that Nehring found the need to write this piece at the book fair she mentions in her opening.…
The speech “The Case for Good Taste in Children’s Books” is given my Meghan Cox Gurdon. She is a children’s book reviewer for the Wall Street journal. In her speech, she discusses what makes a young adult book today. How the stories like the Jungle Book and Alice in Wonderland are the past. Because today, books discuss the profound ways of things that teenagers could be exposed to.…
The Cat in the Hat is one of the most widely known Dr. Seuss books and is one of the most popular with children. The book however may be even deeper or having a meaning adults now as children overlooked; however, when adults now read it to their children they begin to see things that may have not registered before. In this critique it talks about how the Cat in the story is a complete stranger to the children but they still let him in. I agree with idea because it addresses a security issue with robbers and kidnappings, and that children should be taught at a young age to not talk or let strangers into the house. I did see this in my own analysis and how the Cat in many ways like breaking their things is not necessarily robbing but it is an…

Susan his wife but an old lookout tower where he would spend at least eight hours a day writing and doodling till he takes a break to grow his garden. The following year he published a couple of very famous books of his one of which were "Horton hears a who". A major turning point in his career is in 1954 one life magazines criticized the reading level of young children. Then one of his books cat in the hat was published in 1957 and was described by one critic as "tour de force". The cat in the hat was so successful that Dr. Seuss's career just got a huge upgrade.…
The Orbis Pictus Award is the most prestigious award given to authors that successfully create a nonfiction book for children. The authors are celebrated with this award if their work meets a certain set of criterion – accuracy (of the person/event they focus on), style (interesting and stimulating writing), organization, design (attractive details), and usefulness in the classroom – and only one author is honored with the award each year. The book must be written with the purpose of sharing information in a way that children would find interesting, thus the criteria that it be in book format versus a textbook layout. Knowing the five criterions, I explored six Orbis Pictus Award winning books from past years and focused on the elements…

The article "Lollipop Stories: Listening to Children's Voices in the Classroom and Narrative Ethnographical Research" provided insight into this week’s text From Bombs to Books as it discussed the importance of listening to acknowledging children’s voices. By listening to children’s voices one is able to understand their lived experiences. Furthermore, giving children a voice allows them to share their own personal stories. The article mentioned that it is through giving children voices that one is able to acknowledge the diversity and complexity of contemporary childhoods (Hohti and Karlsson ,2). This is certainly true as reading the different children’s stories in From Bombs to Books demonstrated that each child’s experience varied and they…
“I would rather entertain and hope that people learned something than educate people and hope they were entertained”,(Walt Disney). This is one my most treasured qoutes, one because it comes from the late-great Walt Disney and secondly it describes one more manor of how books work. The series of books that tend to sell the greatest amount of copies tend to be the novels that entertain the reader. Flashback to the fourth grade, at the monumental time when I first started wearing glasses there existed a series of the uttermost importance to me and at times it seemed every other kid called, Percy Jackson and the Olympians. I’ll admit at first I was skeptical…
"This is a review of the classic, well known fantasy childrens novel - The Never Ending Story by Michael Ende. I first read this book as a child, given to me by Grandmother whom often recommended or gave books to me as presents to instil a love of reading in me. I grew to love her recommendations as they were often books that were for children, but didn't talk down to them, and this is one such book. The story is a classic coming of age story and hero adventure of a young boy's journey through a fantastical and wonder-filled fantasy land - full of magic, mythical creatures and perilous dangers.…
Students used to read many different types of books, however, it appears to parents as useless material and waste of time. For instance, Harry Potter Books once was among the best seller books in Australia. Because parents limit their kids only to curriculum textbooks and homework, now fiction and novel book selling revenue in Australia has dropped dramatically. I oppose the view that we should limit our children to read other books than curriculum textbooks. We even should aim that children start reading at an earlier age with their parents.…
