She had her own library. Also she used her intelligence to write various poems and essays. In these works, she supports and makes various cases for women’s rights. She lived in the 17th century under a viceroy in Spain’s Mexico. After a critic in the Catholic church shamed her for being a female intellect and owning many books, she wrote a response that’s makes a strong case for women’s education. She appeals to the bishop by using pathos, logos, and biblical backing. She uses pathos by talking about “...this natural impulse that God placed in me.” This appeals to the respondent because God placing a hunger specifically within a person is something that is so personal and is an emotional experience. It connects with the critic because he was a bishop in the Catholic church and must have had a spiritual relationship with God. Therefore, Sor Juana’s description of how God moved her in her life evokes emotion from the bishop. Sor Juana makes a logical appeal as well by giving various examples of scholarly women like the Queen of Sweden, Blaesilla, and Proba Faltonia thriving and improving the world. Since she spoke of many other girls that did good works, she establishes credibility in women. By using logic the bishop, as well as the rest of the world, can deduce that good works can come from women if they are educated. All in all, I feel that CWC has kept an eye on the Catholic church throughout the ages with the exception of the Enlightenment Period. I believe that there are many reasons to include the Catholic church in the Enlightenment Period. Firstly, since this is the original church, we should keep up with our roots and see what Paul’s church has turned into. Secondly, the Catholic church still has a stronghold in many lives today. Moreover, I think that it would be important to see what the Catholics have to say about people taking ownership for their faith. I want to know what the Catholic church had to say about the Great Awakening, Pietism, and Deism. I want to know what they thought of the United States of America. I want to know if they were closely tied to the government at this point or if they were a completely separate entity. I understand that if they didn’t play a big role in this time period, they weren’t included. However, I believe that the insignificance of the Catholic church is significant. That means that people thought for themselves and the Catholic church didn’t play a big role in the lives of the common people. In conclusion, I would’ve liked to see the evolution of the Catholic church throughout time including the Enlightenment
