The story of Enrique’s Journey depicts the everyday life of immigrants trying to make it out of their hellish surroundings and create a life for themselves that is not full of the terrors that they are used to. In Enrique’s Journey by Sonia Nazario, Enrique deals with problems so immense, that they alter his life forever. The story starts off when Enrique is only a young child living in Honduras, a struggling country. He rides on the tops of freight trains heading north and almost every time he is stopped by immigration officers who deport him south. Many of the officers are corrupt and demand money for the immigrants to be released instead of them bringing them south. Enrique was once caught by an officer, shoved into the back of a truck and told “100 pesos [and we] let [you] go”, robbing the immigrants of all they had (Nazario 48). It is a struggle to board and depart the trains. Enrique received “four jagged scars” on his shins from the ladders on the freight cars (Nazario 66). Once an immigrant has boarded the train and safely makes it to the top, that is when the real danger takes place. The train tops are full of gang members and bandits who rob, rape and murder the riders. Migrants describe bandits screaming “Run and we kill you” at the immigrants trying to evade the criminals (Nazario 75). In the story, Enrique learned that nothing comes easily in life, the world can be a cruel place, and most importantly, the grass is not always greener on the other side. This novel left me thinking about those who go through the terrible things that Enrique was put through on a daily basis. I have come to realize that most are not as fortunate as Enrique was, even though his destiny was far different from the one he
