In this essay, I will look at some aspects of my bibliography and how they have been shaped by the world and environment I was born into. I will do this by concentrating on two specific aspects: social class and gender which I believe are the most significant.
I was born into a family that had a unique “social class” dynamic. Social class is a division of a society based on social and economic status. In Zimbabwe, like a number of Capitalist societies, social class has a profound effect on the quality of education one can get which then influences career choices and other income related choices.
As the first born child and oldest son, my father had to resume fatherly duties from a young age. This was because his father has passed on and as per tradition he had to ensure his siblings and mother got all that they needed to survive. This decision required him to drop out of school and work for the family. With the basic education he had, he managed to get his siblings through school all the way past the university and his mother a home to live in. He also became a sort of …show more content…
It has also definitely fuelled my passion for politics as I realized less than 2% of the politicians we have in Zimbabwe are women. As a result, men are making decisions that impact women with very little or no knowledge of how these decisions affect women and we suffer in silence.
In the pursuit to proving to people that females can do what males can do I have managed to travel to several countries and have engorged myself into different cultures. This I feel has given me an adventurous personality and a great ability to stand up for what I want regardless of who agrees of disagrees with me.
In conclusion, as said by C.W Mill, “…the sociological imagination enables us to grasp history and the biography and the relationship between the two within society.” The ideas presented by the sociological imagination have helped me to understand the impact that society has on my life and how it has subconsciously influenced the decisions I have made over the years. Had I not been in the social class I am in or have received prejudice for being the gender I am, my life’s bibliography may have had a completely different storyline to
