The South was very economically reliant on slavery. Many people in the South were farmers and grew crops such as rice, tobacco, and especially cotton. The Cotton Kingdom was growing because of the necessity of that product. Many southerners thought they needed more land because of the global demand for cotton. Many southerners believed that since the Cotton Kingdom was growing that we need slaves in order to produce mass quantities. This however raises some questions. The Second Great Awakening promoted individuals to improve themselves and the world around them. This religious virtue helped to reinforce qualities necessary for participation in the market economy. After people came to follow this belief that realized that it was wrong to hurt another human being. People started to believe in revivalism because it focused on the evangelical, emotional and personal. This way of thinking started in the North and slowly worked it ways to the south. The south however, was very hard to convince because they still believed in the institutional ideology. The Second Great awakening appealed to the lower class, woman and freed slaves. I wonder if the Second Great Awakening helped lead to equal rights? If the Second Great Awakening mostly focused on the individual, how did this ideology become so influential? Usually when you tell someone that they need to work on themselves, it doesn’t usually go over well? But was the appeal of the Second Great Awakening due to the fact that it was so individualized? The individualism of the Second Great Awakening helped to provide comfort during the issues of slavery. the The Second Great Awakening also stressed free will, democratic sensibility, and a challenge to government authorities. If people didn’t speak up about the issues going on in society, how did they expect the government to solve them?
