Relationships can be difficult and all depend on the cooperation of everyone involved. Family relationships can be the hardest just because you can not control who your family is and what your family does. Even if you love the other person (especially a family member), you might not always act loving. In James Hurst's "The Scarlet Ibis", Brother is both hurtful and caring towards Doodle, demonstrating the complex and paradoxical nature of love.

There isn't much argument that Brother was not hurtful towards Doodle; Brother did many terrible things to him.
