Twitter especially, where there are tweets and videos of this type of content every few seconds that you scroll. Now this is not to say that cheating and disloyalty are at astronomical rates and every relationship is doomed to encounter infidelity. However, studies have shown that the rate is increasing slowly but steadily. With married couples in a study by Choi, Catania, and Dolcini’s (1994), only 3% of the married sample had an extramarital affair in the previous 12 months before the survey. Then, in just 7 years another study by Atkins, Baucom, & Jacobson 2001, showed that rates had gone up to 13%. While usually not this exponential, it is quite an interesting increase. However, the normal is a slight increase for a few years, then a slight decrease, and once again a slow increase. This proves that even though not by HUGE amounts, cheating and infidelity, in this case specifically in the highest form of a relationship, marriage, is increasing. It is being publicized and I believe it is desensitizing people and leading to less care or thought about monogamous relationships. Recently, the “hookup culture” has been looming overhead of most people. We hear that term a lot, but almost no evidence is given to support it. In fact, some researchers make bold claims stating that practices such as these have started decreasing. Due to no one knowing the facts, that would be just as easy to believe.
