Firstly, and most importantly, France and Europeans in Algeria made vast fortunes off of the land and opportunity Algeria held. “The settlers formed a privileged elite… Some Europeans made vast fortunes… with the help of large infusions of capital they developed a modern economy.” Basically, the efficient economy the French developed led to the European elites becoming rich and successful (Countriesquest, n.d.). Another benefit was the fact that France got to spread the French image and culture throughout all of Algeria. “France attempted to assimilate its colonies into French culture.” The colonies became identical to France and Algeria turned into an expansion of France, complete with French culture and economy (Rubenstein, 2008). Conquest for the French was very violent and harmful in many ways towards Algeria and its people. “We have burned extensively and destroyed extensively.” The French burned and destroyed a lot of cities and land and anything in their path that they thought necessary to win (Fsmitha, n.d.). Algerian people also lost quite a bit during and after the violent war the French imposed; including land and resources. “The immigrants (European) seized land and resources from the Algerian people.” These immigrants entered during the war while Algeria was at its weakest and proceeded to take needed supplies/resources away from the native population of Algeria (Smith, n.d.) The French also caused a massive civil war between the European Algerians and the Muslims that lasted seven years. “Algeria however won its independence in 1962 only after a bitter seven-year civil war against French forces.” For seven years, there was infighting throughout Algeria tearing people apart and ruining relations (Heath,1997).
