Chances are, if you ask any person if they’ve heard rap, or have ever had fun trying to write their own raps they’ll say yes. “The most interesting finding however is that hip-hop is the world's top genre, showing up on playlists more than all others, regardless of geography or language.” (Independent.com). Rap/Hip-Hop has become the fastest moving musical phenomenon in recent years, maybe even bigger than the Rock-n-Roll explosion of the 1950’s. But what makes Rap/Hip-Hop stand out from other musical genre is the fact that most Rap/Hip-Hop artists are black, or affiliated to a minority group. Although the lyrics were negative they were necessary to promote the abuse police inflicted on minorities.
Aside from police brutality rap also addressed the everyday struggles of inner-city living. Legendary rappers Tupac Shakur (2Pac) and Christopher Wallace (Notorious B.I.G.) are probably the most influential rappers of all time. Some of their lyrics dubbed “ghetto poetry” that inscribed positive messages to their fans. They used their own personal experiences to express the hardships of drugs, gang banging, sexism, and racism. The most predominant rapper, 2Pac, had the reputation to include meaningful lessons in his lyrics.
