The Research Process
Just over two weeks ago, me and two of my classmates conducted a survey amongst our class to find out their hobbies and interests out of college, as up until this point we had only got to know them in a short period of time. This survey proved to be quite informative and showed us what interests certain individuals in our class. We surveyed around ten people and our results varied significantly.
Usually when surveying individuals the survey will be composed of either qualitative or quantitative questions, but in our questionnaire it seems it mostly consisted of both quantitative and qualitative.
Our questionnaire was predominantly quantitative, which is a form of research which is most commonly used to find a statistical/numerical answer to the question, for instance if a survey had a lot of multiple choice questions you could assume it is a quantitative survey which is being used to gather a numerical figure such as what brand is used most or something along those lines. Where as a qualitative survey would be more open questions which require a personal answer, for example: "why don 't you go to the cinema in your spare time?" This finds an underlying reason and, or motive. Qualitative is more specific and detailed compared to a quantitave is a more vaired set form of survey which has the possibilites already lined out. Personally, I think quantitative surveys have more success as they are easier to fill out and can be done in a far shorter time. However, you will not get a detailed analysis by that form of research where as a qualitative survey would 90% of the time give you an exact reason as to why someone does something in particular. In our Questionnaire was based on peoples hobbies and activities quantitative form of research suited us far more. Firstly, because it was easier, quicker to get round the indivuals who partook but most importantly as all of the people we surveyed were teenagers we had a fairly good idea of what they would do, the stereotypical things that in fact most teen 's do do. Qualitative research did make a familiar appearance in our work though and it was indeed useful. As it provided a more detailed answer for the small minority of questions that consisted of this form of research. Most people will have a relatively good idea of simple Pro 's and Con 's of questionnaire 's, e.g: The fact that you can obtain information off more than person in such a quick time making this form of research effective and non time-consuming unlike a face to face survey. …show more content…
Following on from the last point another conveniance of questionnaires is that people can complete the questionnaire in a time conveniant to them, instead of being stopped in the middle of the road and having 15 minutes of your time taken. Although, when taking a questionnaire in your own time there is a chance a question may not be overly precise and in turn this means you cannot receive a detailed answer, this can lead to inaccacurate replies due to people feeling the question 's are biased or possibly poorly worded/formatted. Also, it is immensely difficult for someone to expand on their answer when the questionnaire only has 3 tick boxes to it and more than likely no explanation box, or …show more content…
Although, i think that the biggest selling point of a questionnaire is the fact that you can do it as an annonymous indivual which could definitely lead to more honest answers, although this also allows people an easy pass to lie and be deceitful as they know there will be no consequences.
Personally, i believe that quantitative research is the most useful form of research within the media industry as often people dont have the time nor effort to complete a full survey consisting of 40 questions which all need 30 words typed for them. In the media industry New 's agencies and similar companies will use quantitative questionnaire 's/survey 's to provide themselves with a relatively detailed group of data. Usually, they target a specific demographic/audience, for instance if they were finding out what Video game is most popular they would aim their campaign at teens and young adults.
Usually they convey their info via some form of graph which is pleasing to the eye rather than a full page of writing that a qualititave type of survey would
