He is ceaselessly disregarded and dehumanised by racial discrimination, which he is attempts to overcome. This is echoed by Steinbecks description of crooks’ room as ‘neat and tidy’ ‘not how a savage beast would keep their room.’ This is an idea of how blacks were perceived by the whites. On the other hand, Steinbeck portrays crooks as cynical, which would be expected of an individual that is discriminated and ostracised by society.
