In the memoir, A Long Way Gone, by Ishmael Beah, young Sierra Leonean soldiers, including the author himself, regularly abuse the stimulant cocaine for its crucial benefits on the merciless and demanding battlefield. Cocaine is “an addictive drug derived from coca or prepared synthetically” (Dictionary), producing a powerful high by acting on the brain, then traveling to the bloodstream and affecting the entire body (WebMD). The American Cocaine Era, from the Early 1980s to early 1990s, is viewed from many as a thing of the past but the very effects that it has had on society and cities such as Los Angeles has withstood the test of time. Los Angeles felt the blow from crack cocaine early on as 1980s as it was a new way for addicts to get their “kicks.” In fact by 1982, “Los Angeles hospital emergency rooms reported the nation's greatest increase in cocaine overdoses,” which now established Los Angeles as a city that was hardest hit, the most early of all American cities from the crack epidemic (Witkin, 46). This researched fact in addition with another stating that “cocaine-dependent individuals reliably display[ed] higher impulsivity ratings” than individuals…

Often, media fails to display appropriate results of drug usage, other than the expected “high”. The media also glorified not only cocaine, but all narcotic trafficking to a level of prestige. Interestingly enough, as stated above, the media in a symbolic way, showed both positive and negative reinforcement with the involvement of cocaine trafficking. Unfortunately, in American Gangster, the movie failed to show the negative effects of cocaine manufacturing processing, usage, and trafficking. In order for responsible consumption of cocaine, one must conduct research of potency of cocaine, how it is manufactured, the difference between powdered and crack cocaine, and it’s processing speed in the body depending on the type of consumption.…
