(Burgess & Burgess) Many people today have the mindset that if they get their ideas across, it’s a win, but if not, it’s a loss. It is important for people, especially politicians dealing with key issues, to realize that compromise is essential. In order to do that, a person must be open-minded to listening to the ideas of someone who may have a different outlook from their own. I feel as though most people get caught up in trying to convince others that their own opinion is the only correct one. Now more than ever, the country is divided and many people feel strongly about the important issues facing the country. I believe if we focus on the suggested solutions above, for promoting a civil discourse, will be able to limit the destructiveness, and therefore, reach the desired results. I think the best way to promote civil discourse is to start by simply listening to each other. Instead of watching political debates in which the candidates seem to disagree before hearing the first answer, I think we need to have more conversation style discussions, rather than debates. I think having more open-minded leaders, who are willing to hear other people’s ideas and try to come up with a compromise, is most important. While I acknowledge this can be very difficult, I believe it is possible in today’s society, which has seen countless technological advances and movement toward progressive
