Pose the question: The question is what the survey will focus on. The question for “The Lunchroom Project” is “What do third graders eat for lunch?” Also, this step can include breaking the main question down into multiple questions that can be useful for pin-pointing information and useful when creating the survey. This step can include comparing, summarizing and drawing conclusions. As a class “The Lunchroom Project” wrote a group report on the most popular main dishes, on page 46. From their pictograph, they were able to figure out that cornbread was the most popular side dish. Also, from the soup data picture, they found that chicken noodle soup was a favorite soup choice.
Communication of the results involves talking about the results of the data and what all the data means. For “The Lunchroom Project” every student wrote a letter to the director of food services. An example is “…the children noticed the popularity of pasta as an occasional dish; as a result of their report, pasta become a regular alternative to the main entrée.” The student’s letters helped convince the food services to change some of their food options.
