Johnson launched the war on poverty in 1964. This amplified the level of welfare and increased citizen’s dependence on the state for income which, in turn, punishes working and marriage by decreasing provided aid. This approach is not sustainable. If people are not working, they are removing value from the local and national economy, further increasing the burden on the government and taxpayers. Promoting the ever-increasing number of children born out of wedlock, children supported by welfare no longer have strong father figures to learn from. Two-thirds of poor children live in single-parent homes, almost always living with their mother. In this fatherless environment, moral values and reason breakdown outside of the home, crime, and poverty become the new standard. Children born outside of marriage are seven times more likely to be in poverty. Without marriage, the household has less income to support the family and the mom is forced to decide between sanity, income, and parenting. Regardless, it is an especially destructive environment for children during their fragile development. Affordable housing options such as apartments should be built to ease the financial burden of home ownership and reduce difficult to isolate crime. Urban farms, parks, and recreational facilities would allow the resocialization of the community while providing a means to peacefully expel energy, promote health, and redevelop moral values conducive to success. This culture would create and bring in new businesses and provide accessible jobs, further attracting new residents to the area and increase tax revenue to help replace some of what is lost with welfare.
