The city of Manchester battled health issues throughout the industrial revolution. Document 3 is an official document written by Thomas B. Document 1 is a comparison of two maps of Manchester city, one map is what the city looked like in 1750 drawn by W.H Thomson and the other map shows the expansion in 1850 sculpted by Ashley Baynton Williams. The first picture shows how simple the city used to be but then how it transformed into a very busy and heavy polluted environment. Document 2 is written by Robert Southey and English Romantic poet who visited Manchester in 1807. Robert writes about in Manchester, “The houses were all built of brick and blackened with smoke”. Manchester for the regular person wasn’t enjoyable at all but for the members of parliament like Thomas B. Macaulay in document 3, they viewed the city as the perfect place to live. Document 5 also describes a journey in Manchester through the view of a French visitor named Alexis de Tocqueville. Alexis went into the city in 1835 and published a book about this adventures through the very uncared for city. Alexis goes on to write, “No where do you see happy ease taking his leisurely walk in the streets of the city or going to seek simple enjoyment in the surrounding country”. The writer doesn’t see an excitement in the city; all he sees are people at work and doing the same routine every single day. In document 4 Frances Anne Kemble an actress, poet and dramatists gives her view in a journal on a train ride to liver pool. Frances writes, “Shouting “no corn laws”,*the vast Manchester crowed was the lower order of Artisans and mechanics, among whom a dangerous spirit of discontent with the government prevailed”. Frances is a person of importance and doesn’t have to worry about these tariffs just like in document 3 when Thomas talks about how wonderful life is in Manchester, these restrictions don’t impact both people of power. Document 7 is written by a French socialist and women’s rights advocate, her name was Flora Tristan. She writes in her journal about how women feel hopeless in the revolution and how women feel oppressed. She documents, “O God! Can progress be bough only at the cost of men’s lives?” This shows how much the man’s lives affected everyday were having all the weight on their shoulders and the women just left to watch it all go down. Document 10 is coming from William Alexander Abram who was a journalist and historian that wrote in his journal during the year 1868.
