Wells clearly lays out four points on why black people should be allowed to have the right to a fair trial: consistency, economy, “the honor of Anglo-Saxon civilization” (Course Reader 26), and for our country. Wells states that it is our nation’s duty to right its wrongs, meaning that it should do right to African Americans. If our nation had already done justice to “the Armenian Christian, the Russian Jew, the Irish Home Ruler, the native women of India, the Siberian exile, and the Cuban patriot” (Course Reader 26), then they could do right by the African American, thus demonstrating the point of consistency. The United States had to pay close to half a million dollars just in reparations for the lynching of Italians living in Louisiana. If the lynching of African Americans continues, the cost of reparations would be costly for our nation. The white man has even confessed that they cannot protect their women without resorting to violence. If the way that the nation was going, the Anglo-Saxon civilization would have no honor when compared to other civilizations.
