The Stanford encyclopedia declares a view of Utilitarianism is one ought to maximize the overall good — that is, consider the good of others as well as one's own good (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy.) I ethically decided that this stance was the best for the situation given to us. Ultimately, I want to make everyone happy, therefore I will leave the choice of the staff choosing if they should take the experimental medication. I sense that everybody ought to have the right to decide for themselves. We are all human beings and have the right to determine what we will put inside our bodies. I would not only please everyone else but most importantly myself. I do not think that I can ever decide such a reasoning for anyone other them myself. These situations can bring the worst in people and cause chaos. We must stay confident that the experimental medication will work, we must allow the staff to make their own judgements. Ultimately up to them to take the medication or not, I can feel best about myself knowing that I did my finest to please everyone. I honestly cannot see any other way to go by this situation, I cannot live with myself knowing that I took away this individual right to decide for their own. Nevertheless, Virtue as stated in our text book Aristotle’s philosophy we enjoy doing what is right (Solomon, Robert C., Kathleen Marie Higgins, and Clancy Martin. 522.) Equally important, I enjoy doing what is right but to some they may interpret right and wrong differently which is why I favor utilitarianism, I enjoy doing what is right but I myself also enjoy making everyone happy.
