Look out the window across the street new neighbors are moving in. The females are carrying the boxes in while males are carrying furniture. This is a normal occurrence with nuclear families. Females are socially viewed as the weaker gender. Males have to be strong. These ideals are what drive the chance of double standards. Double standards between genders have almost become a social normality, but must end because they impede equality in social issues, in the military, and in regards to the law.
Social Discrepancies

One of the greatest leaps was in the military. Women in the military are not only nurses anymore. However there is still a debate if women should leap more into combat roles. Marine Sgt. Maj. Micheal P. Barrett says “Our plan is deliberate, measured and responsible. We will not lower our standards” (qt. in Santangelo) But there is a double standard given to women. Santangelo says “In the Physical Fitness Test, for example a male perfect score is achieved by and 18 minute three mile run, 20 pull ups, and 100 sit-ups in two minutes. A female perfect score is a 21 minute three mile run, a 70 second flexed arm hang, and 100 sit-ups in two minutes.” There is a significant difference between the two perfect scores. This isn’t fair to men or to women; the men start to build a resentment and cynicism toward women from the different standards (Owens 41). If the standards by the marines aren’t to be lowered why is the Physical Fitness Test used have different standards for men and women. Men are strong and must always be strong. Men experienced more physical violence than women in the last twelve months but women also face rape and stalking (Mantel). Domestic violence is often down played because many don’t realize it is a crime. Mantel explores that the CDC found that reports of domestic abuse are almost even between men and women, “About 55 percent of the victims (6,982,000) were female and 45 percent were male (5,691,000).” The mentality that a man must be strong and can’t be beaten by a woman is magnified when it comes to being sexually
