In chapter 3, Tom encounters the truck driver that has a “no rider” sticker on the back of his truck. Knowing that, Tom still decided to ask for a ride. At first, the truck driver was hesitant and did not want to give Tom a ride, however he decides that he wants to do a good deed so he changes his mind: “Scrunch down on the running board till we get around the bend” (7). The truck driver was reluctant to help at first, but he eventually changes his mind and joins with Tom to give him a ride and help him out. We see a clear shift from worrying about oneself to worrying about Tom and that’s why he decides to help out Tom. When the Joads begin their journey to the west, Casy was still staying with them, but he had no other place to go. Instead, the Joads family accepts him into their family, Tom tells him, “Yeah. We think long as you’re goin’ with us, you ought to be over with us, helpin’ to figger things out” (107). Tom explains that Casy must help out the family indicating that he is now apart of their family. The Joads could’ve just left Casy behind and went on with their journey, and not cared about what will come after for Casy when he is alone. Instead they welcomed him to be apart of their family. So they decide to unite together and provide Casy with a family. After Grampa’s death, the family decided to save their money in order
