Reward Power Vs Coercive Power

When it comes to being a leader it takes more than just being well liked amongst peers. A leader must be organized and able to use different types of power to achieve goals and ready followers. One type of power is called coercive power. According to the book titled Leadership: Enhancing the Lessons of Experience, by Gordy J. Curphy, Ginnett, and Hughes, coercive power is, “the potential to influence others through the administration of negative sanctions or the removal of positive events” (Curphy, 2015, p. 128). Another type of power that relates to coercive power is reward power, as stated by Leadership, “the potential to influence others due to one’s control over desired resources.” (Curphy, 2015, p. 127). By the definitions above, coercive …show more content…
Molm in Is Punishment Effective? Coercive Strategies in Social Exchange, the article states that two people in a relationship can have “reward power” and “punishment power” over the other (Molm, 1994, 76). According to Molm, coercive power is not just one person having power over another to give them punishment. Coercive power can be either equally divided or skewed among members in a relationship (Molm, 1994, p. 76). The article says that reward and punishment are associated because in order for someone to receive a punishment or a reward, it must be administered by another person (Molm, 1994, p. 75). Punishing someone does not have to be a physical punishment either. For example, in the article, she says that a punishment could be a child screaming because the parent is not giving it any attention, or a politician refusing to sign a bill because there is something he wants in return (Molm, 1994, p. 77). Here, Molm is showing that the punishment could be something as small as showing dissatisfaction. So, if any actions or inactions are occurring for a specific reason at another’s expense, it is a punishment. According to Leadership, punishment and its ability to effect the effectiveness of followers is more or less mixed, often times it depends on the situation and how much punishment was actually administered (Curphy, 2015, p. 688). So, punishment is a very controversial topic and it has been seen that …show more content…
Followers and leaders can have different types of interactions. For example, in Band of Brothers Episode Curahee, originally written by S. E Ambrose but produced by Spielberg and Hanks, a show about WW2, Captain Sobel is not well liked by his men. For example, he forced a member of Easy company to take a three-mile hike to the top of a mountain alone because he drank a sip of water on the previous march when the company was told to not drink anything (Hanks & Spielberg, 2001). Here, Sobel is using his coercive power to punish the soldier. But, in the episode this punishment led the rest of easy company to rally around the one man who was required to do the hike. In the scene, the rest of the company comes running up behind the man on the hill and all of the soldiers run to the top together (Hanks &Spielberg, 2001). Here, Sobel is using his coercive inappropriately. Throughout the Curahee episode, Sobel pushes the men more than necessary sometimes. For example, Sobel takes away leave for the weekend because he said there was something that was dirty. The men responded angrily and started taking a dislike to Sobel (Hanks &Spielberg, 2001). This is an example of when a leader uses punishment inappropriately. By Sobel taking away Easy companies’ leave, he is preventing them from becoming closer as a unit and also from giving them some time off. This, as seen in the episode, can lead to dislike. The

Many people debate the logic of being a leader verses a follower, and come to the consensus that neither is wrong, and in fact we need both leaders and followers to have a successful society. What makes the difference, however, is whether the one following is lead like a cattle being led to the butcher, or whether he is an advocate for himself and those around him. When the follower blindly follows orders and is nothing more than a 'cow standing in the rain' then he is not only useless, but causes more problems than whatever good he may have caused by doing his job whilst knowing what consequences his actions have, instead of merely doing his job to get it done. The leader needs to know that his men need a reason, a drive, a passion, and not…

There are mostly two kinds of leaders, an arrogant leader, and a confident leader. Of course there are different kinds of leaders, but most leaders are divided into those two categories. An arrogant leader would mostly be all-talk and would be disliked by his own subordinates. A skilled arrogant leader, however, would be more liked by his subordinates since his skills would make up for his attitude. It is the same with a confident, it mostly depends on an individual’s skill.…

The Servant by James C. Hunter provides a foundation and an understanding of true leadership. Through the lives of John Daily and five other struggling leaders on a retreat, Hunter uses Brother Simeon to explain the principles of servant leadership, which causes John and the others to reflect deeply on their character, trust, and commitment. Creating and deepening the principles described by Brother Simeon will enhance one’s leadership perspective and will prove to be beneficial for a school principal. “Leadership is the skill of influencing people to work enthusiastically toward goals identified as being for the common good” (Hunter, 2012, p 28). To influence people, you must build authority, which is done when you identify and meet the…

From someone not under the responsibility of a leadership role, it may seem like a wonderful job, since they can escape from the usual workload that a non-leader has to put up with, and have authority over others. Yet, they tend to overlook the amount of dedication and self-evaluation that a leader has to go through in order for their group to succeed. One must better and uphold themselves to a high standard in order to be an efficient leader, and not for power alone. They must have a wide knowledge of their position and patience to help others in case an issue or situation arises. When things go wrong, the leader, not the group, is blamed, and often is the one that pays for the consequences that their peers have done under their watch.…

Leadership Kathy Dunlap Bethel University MOD 310 April 24, 2017 Kameke Payne Leadership No one theory of leadership has ever been accepted by all, but the common thought of leadership is that it is an influence process, occurs within a group, involves goals, and attainment. Some people think leaders are born with a trait that innately makes them leaders, while others theorize that it is a characteristic of an individual, but we have learned that leaders are a product of their development and life experiences. Leaders are concerned with understanding people’s beliefs and gaining their commitment. They function without focusing on the opinions of others, which allows them to think of new ideas and motivate others to develop these…

The main reason why coercive influence is a non-factor for leaders, is it uses threats and punishments to entice followers to work towards a goal, but does not include the leaders working with the followers to achieve the goals as a team. Another reason why followers might respond to leadership initiative in a reward base, that includes them working together to achieve this goal, and in due of achieving it a team reward is given. There are three ways leader can influence others which is force, reason, or charm. Where is force and reason are rational even when we are “forced” to do something, we obey for a good reason. But, charm is not. Charm is based on emotional manipulation and, as such, it can trump any rational assessment and bias our views. Charismatic leaders influence by charm rather than reason and when they run out of charm they tend to revert to…
