Friendship is another huge theme throughout The Help, however, it is not the friendship that most readers would expect. The theme friendship is not shown between any of the white wealthy people, but it is shown between Miss Skeeter and Aibileen. Aibileen is at risk of losing everything in her life for the book her and Miss Skeeter are writing, yet she still opens her home to Skeeter and works day and night to get the book finished. Once the book is finally published, their friendship continues. When Skeeter gets a job offer in New York, their selfless friendship is shown when Skeeter and Aibileen begin to discuss the job here “’What you mean, you can’t take it? This is a very obvious theme because the entire book that the maids write is their way of taking a stand against the white bosses. All of the maids, along with Miss Skeeter, wrote a book telling what the maids had been through to show that they are not being treated properly. All of the maids are tired of being discriminated against and being treated poorly simply because of the color of their skin. If there were not people who were willing to take a stand, nothing would have ever changed and African Americans would still be treated terribly today. Taking a stand is also shown when Minny stands up to Hilly. Hilly spread lies about Minny so instead of just accepting what was being done to her, she took a stand and got her revenge on Hilly. If Minny had not defended herself, Hilly would continue to spread lies which would keep Minny from getting another job. Minny eventually tells her new boss about what she did to Hilly and knowing that helped her new boss also be able to avoid conflict with Hilly (397). No matter where a person comes from or who they are, taking a stand is an important part of life.
