Could you imagine living in a world without pain, color, and emotions? Well, in the book The Giver, everyone must follow a set of rules that create sameness across the whole community. A boy named Jonas is given the job of receiver of memory. His job is to keep the memories of the past to himself so the community can be protected from all those bad things that might cause chaos. Jonas makes a plan with a man he calls the Giver. The plan is to cross a border that keeps all the memories from the community. Jonas ends up making it past the border releasing all the memories of emotions, color, and pain. The reason I think the movie is more powerful than the book is because the movie has more action and suspense, and because the movie is better …show more content…
For example, on page 123 in the book, it says, “Well…’ Jonas had to stop and think it through. ‘If everything's the same, then there aren’t any choices! I want to wake up in the morning and decide things! A blue tunic, or a red one?“ This shows that he only says that he hates the rules, but doesn’t try to do anything yet and it stays like that most of the story until he goes on the journey to pass the border. The book also has moments when Jonas says how the community could become dangerous if people had these memories. Like on page 124, Jonas says, ”Not safe?’ Jonas said with certainty. ‘What if they were allowed to choose their own mate? And chose wrong?’ “Or what if,’he went on, almost laughing at the absurdity, ‘they chose their own jobs?’ ’Frightening, isn’t it?’ The Giver said. Jonas chuckled. ‘Very frightening. I can’t even imagine it. We really have to protect people from the wrong choices.” This gives the reader moments of doubt that Jonas will do anything about this problem, because he’s saying that it’s good that the community doesn’t have these memories and that's the main point of the story, to release all the memories back to the

Jonas is responsible for carrying the weight and knowledge of the past through memories, so other people do not have to do so. Jonas does not have memories of his own past as Offred and Tim O’Brien do, but rather his memories of are the past of what society was before it had transformed into a dystopia of uniformity. Jonas sits in a room everyday to “re-experience the memories again and again,” until he is able to understand what they mean and why they are important (Lowry 121). While O’Brien and other soldiers are able to share these memories with others through storytelling, Jonas is forbidden from sharing the memories that he was given with anyone, even though he feels that “memories need to be shared” (Lowry 154). But both Jonas and O’Brien feel pressure to keep the past alive by preserving their memories.…
