If the effect is severe enough these changes could lead to an irregular heartbeat. There seven studies being reviewed in which people between the ages of 18 and 45 were tested showed; those who consumed energy drinks had experienced a 4 percent change in the rhythm of their heart. The changes could be interpreted as small, but if someone who has an existing heart problem, or who come from a family with history of heart problems, they should really cease in drinking these highly caffeinated energy drinks. There is an incredible amount of caffeine and sugar in these drinks. A 24oz energy drink contains 500mg of caffeine which is similar to 4-5 cups of coffee (Objective). This can cause serious heart rhythm, blood flow and blood pressure problems and it can be especially life threatening for people with pre-existing cardiac issues (pathos). These drinks can also disrupt sleep patterns, they can cause anxiety, digestion problems and they can even lead to dehydration.…

    Frog Caffeine Experiment

Caffeine serves as a lignin that physically binds to the receptor and triggers the increase of cyclic AMP concentration (Watt & Routledge, 1986). The Increase in CAMP allows for the activation of protein Kinases, which increases heart rate and other metabolic/intracellular processes. Since the frog was not introduced to caffeine prior to the experiment, there was a drastic peak in the heart rate after just a couple minutes (Figure 1). This parallels the situations in humans because the people who don’t consume caffeine on a regular basis have more drastic effects on the heart rate versus those who consume caffeine on a daily basis. If more than the normal amount of caffeine (more than 500 mg) is consumed, there is a significant increase of heart rate and a spontaneous increase in blood pressure, although it is unclear of exactly why blood pressure increases when caffeine is introduced to the system.…

Caffeine is a big factor in both coffee and energy drinks. Caffeine is a good boost, but too much can be hazardous. Coffee has many benefits to it as long as no extra sugars, syrups, and creamers aren’t added. When it comes to energy drinks, the boost of quick energy is one of the, if not the only, benefits they have. Health risks come with almost everything, and coffee does have some, but they do not interfere with your health as serious as energy drinks do.…

My data shows that the trials without liquid had an average percent change of -76% for heart rate, an average percent change of -74.25% for the trials with water and a percent change of 43% for the trials with Gatorade. This data shows that the sports drink has a greater effect on lowering heart rate during exercise than only water. It seems that my hypothesis was proven correct in that the sports drink with electrolytes did have a greater effect on heart rate and blood pressure, although I did not expect such a great difference in statistics. In conclusion sports drinks with electrolytes do actually make a big difference in lowering the heart rates of athletes and thus could lead to better performance from those athletes. A follow up experiment could be preformed with different sports drink brands to see if one could lower the heart rate of the participant more…
