Since Edwin established the scale of the universe and laid the observational basis, he helped us understand what are galaxies like in the universe. To start off, Edwin noticed a Cepheid variable in the Andromeda Nebula which is known to astronomers as M31. For Edwin to obtain his photographs, he used Mount Wilson 100-inch telescope. Once he found his variables and determined their periods and visible magnitudes, he used a technique which is called: “Leavitt’s period-luminosity …show more content…
V. M. Silpher had, during a periods of years, made spectroscopic observations on tens of galaxies which showed, on the basis of the Doppler shifts recorded, all these galaxies were heading back from the earth at velocities which were roughly 300 and 1,800 kilometers per second. Edwin later realized that the great significance of Silpher’s examinations for cosmological theories and designed a plan for measuring the radial and distance velocities of as many galaxies as possible, down to the slightest ones detectable with Mount Wilson 100-inch telescope. Here is a citation from Edwin, “The universe is unfolding as it should.” This excerpt points out that Edwin is saying that the universe is expanding and things are happening as they do as time goes on. For instance, Edwin had interpreted the universe as expanding and this quote tells us he is saying the universe is spreading out as it should. Edwin Hubble did many great things. He even contributed to inventing something. Since this guy is an astronomer, he had an essential role in the construction and design of the Hale 200-inch telescope. Edwin once said, ‘Observations always involve theory.” This short quotation from Edwin tells us that everything you see, will always make you think of an idea or set of ideas to explain something you do not know. This quote is relevant to him helping make part of the telescope because he made observations through telescopes. So, while he looked through telescopes and saw things, him seeing things that he didn’t understand, he made theories or speculated
