The Denmark Hågerup Ifr Field School Analysis

Decent Essays
The Denmark- Hågerup IFR field school fills all of the requirements that I was looking for when I started looking for field school opportunities. I wanted to find something that was focused on osteology and the interpretation of human remains. This school is particularly interesting because of its timeline. The 13th to 16th century burials that the team is excavating will show evidence of the lifestyles people living during this time period. I am particularly interested in how pain and illness can be seen in the skeletal remains of individuals. This time peroid, because it was lacking the medical knowledge necessary for preventative and curative care of sick individuals, will have a great deal of paleopathological examples. I was also attracted to this particular field school because of its state of organization. …show more content…
While I wasn't particular about where the site was located, I knew I wanted to travel abroad. I have traveled abroad before during the spring semester of my sophomore year so I was interested in traveling and studying abroad once again. There is a great deal of experience, personal and educational, to be gained from living and studying abroad. Because I have not had access to a full osteology course, I also wanted to attend a field school that would allow me to learn a great deal of osteological information in a hands on environment. The school in Denmar was also attractive to me because the site is a collaborative effort by a local university as well as the university of Toronto. This aspect will create a collaborative environment that I am excited about participating in. Overall, this field school seems like it was meant for me. I am excited to learn from everyone in this program and gain experiences that I anticipate will shape my future career and educational

I am applying for Farmville Education program because I think this is a wonderful opportunity to learn about secularism. I believe it is important to learn about racial prejudices that were commonplace in american society. I understand these prejudices were wrong but that they did shape American culture and society throughout the course of our nation's history. I think it is important to learn about these racial prejudices especially today, when our own president is publicly slandering specific ethnic groups and to learn by example a way to reasonably protest in a public manner and to develop a better sense of moral…

The Kennewick Man is human skeleton discovered in 1996 whose ethnic affiliation has sparked legal controversy and scientific debates. Scientists asserted that the Kennewick Man neither belonged to Native Americans nor related to the tribes in the Northwest areas of Pacific region. These two groups advocated for the repatriation bones because they believed they were related to the Kennewick Man. The main law that warranted the return of the bones to natives was the Native Americans Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). There is a case study of civil rights and the deliberate pace of change in the Birkland textbook (pp. 96–102). This appears to be a case study of some interest, given the materials covered this week. Think about the following questions: What do you see as some of the lessons in the case study? As I reflect on Birkland’s case study, the first lesson I gathered is the separation of powers and the system of federalism serves as a double edge sword.…

Throughout the two high school visits, the reoccurring theme of history and its role in the formation and development of public schools was reflected in both schools’ visions and goals. Pearl-Cohn Entertainment Magnet High School was formed due to the integration of Pearl High School, a school that was majorly African American, with Cohn High School, which was majorly Caucasian, in 1896 (“Pearl-Cohn Entertainment Magnet High School”). Additionally, Hume-Fogg Magnet High School is the junction of Hume High School and Fogg High School in 1912 (“Hume-Fogg Magnet High School”). Both of these mergences relate to the ruling in the Oliver Brown v. Board of Education case (1954), stating that “federal courts were to ‘enter such orders and decrees consistent with this opinion as are necessary and proper to admit to public schools on a racially nondiscriminatory basis with all deliberate speed the parties to these cases’”…
