Rhetoric is a fundamental building block in building one’s claim in writing and speaking. It is define as “the study and art of writing and speaking well” in order to build a strong argument (webster's dictionary). Although, rhetoric allows the audience to think logically, it can also weaken one’s argument through lack of trust towards the audience. Through analysis such as learning the writers techniques, the audience are able to critique their writing in order to fully connect them. Lent uses a weak effect towards the audience through fallacies, he uses ethos in order to change the audience mind of overprotective parents. As Dr. Lent is surrounded by credibility he establishes a sense of authority among the audience by providing proof of reliability. He uses “scientists,” and “other studies” to establish trust within his audience that he is not the only doctor to discuss this argument. The use of the expression “these studies do not stand alone,” conveys to the audience that the speaker is qualified enough to argue based on several of the research he has conducted. Dr. Lent’s also uses credibility by demonstrating that the studies have been used “in a variety of animals and [rats].” It helps the audience accept his argument and take him seriously. Lent loses his power by using a weak fallacy, his argument continues to focus on clear reasoning and evidence to give the audience a different perspective. It is important to have an article with these strengths to generate a connection with the audience. Despite the fact that there are several flaws in the article, these essential tools construct motivations and influences for those who oppose the idea of letting their child explore and to do things themselves. Parents often try to make the best choices in order for their children to have a successful life, yet some parents will want to foster their kid a little too much resulting in poor decision making. This article can change audience’s conversation on this issue for better by children gaining independence and finding the courage to create the life they deserve. Children will impact the future and they should be taught to master their own goals and hopes individually.
