Disability is not inability is a common phrase many people understand today. In this regard, many have accepted that the people with disabilities have capacity to undertake some duties just like the other people, which can be seen in the increasing number of people with disabilities in institutions of higher learning as well as many working places. Therefore are different forms of disabilities, some visible and others invisible. Statistics indicate that 14.1% of people living with disabilities are unemployed, which is double of the unemployment rate among the people living without disabilities (Wehrman, 2016). Many of the people living with disabilities are not landing to the jobs that they have trained to do. For example, Wehrman (2016) discusses a case of a person with disability who trained in the local college and received a certificate in office support specialist but she was landing to jobs not related to the training. She explained that many of the employers were skeptical about employing her because they thought that their organizations would have to incur a lot of expenses to facilitate a person with disability to provide the required services. This must be happening to many other individuals with visible and invisible disability, explaining why 14.1% are unemployed while others are doing jobs that they have not been trained to do. Dealing with stigma can be a challenging task, which interferes with the capability of an individual with a disability to perform well in school or in the work place. In this regard, it is becoming increasingly important for the employers to have a special attention to the employees with disabilities to ensure that their experiences and memories do not deny them the chance of being productive. Management in institutions of higher learning should also be highly committed to ensuring that the students with disabilities are able to deal with stigma that could be holding them from realizing their academic goals as well as any other goals they might want to realize in life. People with visible disabilities characterized by aspects such as wheel chairs, white canes, among others may find it easier to discuss their problems with the employees.
