The first main cause of homelessness is affordable housing. Families nowadays live paycheck to paycheck, government money, and or a disabilities check. With high rent nowadays it is hard for families to find a good affordable house or an apartment for at least $500 or less a month. “Women who live in poverty are often forced to choose between abusive relationships and homelessness. 50% of the cities surveyed by the U.S. Conference of Mayors domestic violence as the primary cause of homelessness” (U.S. Conference of Mayors. 2005). Most women become homeless because they are running from an abusive relationship and have nowhere else to go. Most women are afraid of getting caught or afraid to tell someone what is going on in fear of getting judged. According to National Alliance to End Homelessness, “One study in Massachusetts found that 92 percent of homeless women had experienced severe physical or sexual assault at some point in their lives, 63 percent had been victims of violence by an intimate partner, and 32 percent had been assaulted by their current or most recent partner”. According to National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, “Victims of domestic violence lost about 8 million days of paid work because of the violence that they experienced. 4.1 million dollars is spent directly to on mental health and medical services for domestic violence victims.” It is sad to see women going through this but it is even sadder when there are children involved, seeing them sleeping on the streets or in cars, getting made fun of because their mom can not affordable the brand new shoes or …show more content…
After veterans come back from war some of them do not get the help they need and simply do not want the help. About 60% are in shelters and the other 40% are unsheltered. Most veterans have substance abuse and most of them know that with the help of the government they will have to stay clean, so they stick with what they know. Sleeping night and day, taking drugs, drinking, eating whatever, and going unshowered. Veteran also have trouble adjusting to civilian life or have limited education skills such as basic math, english, science, etc. “Veterans represent 11% of the adult civilian population, but 26% of the homeless population” according to the Homeless Research Institute. The number of living homeless veterans is greater than the number of veterans who died during war. Most of the veterans today are either missing limbs or have severe mental or health problems. They have a hard time finding jobs so they can support themselves or their families. They do not believe in taking the steps necessary to help them get back on their feet, like getting health insurance, a government check, or paid
