The aim of this project is to instil and foster the growth of self-initiative with high school students by incorporating a sustainable urban gardening system. By teaching scholars how to sustainably feed themselves there are economic, social and environmental values of this initiative. The method of hydroponics has been used extensively as a sustainable means of producing food. The system grows food in an enclosed space,without the use of soil . This model will be introduced in the Biology classroom as part of the classroom curriculum on ecosystem and food production unit. Goals and Objectives
1. To allow students to see that this avenue of agriculture can be done indoors and still yield beneficial results to their health, the organic way. It will also foster critical thinking strategies since they will be dealing with a live specimen and keeping them alive will be a task they will not take lightly.
2. To show how workload can be lessened when you work smart allowing entrepreneurial minds to start flourishing. With self-management and co-operation amongst their peer 's meaningful problem-solving approach can be achieved all creating a firm platform for expansion holistically. Even equipping them with the power of choice, that is allowing them to exercise the right to vote democratically on what to grow and justifying why.
3. To take classroom engagement to another level with an edible lab project seems by far the most superior way to have 100% student participation. We are seeking a grant to help fund our sustainable classroom gardens. As a growing school, we seek to ensure that the curriculum is inquiry based and allows students to apply practical skills in their classrooms. As a student in the urban setting, there is a lack of exposure to Agricultural practices and there are demands for fresh fruits and vegetables. With this lack of skills and demands, students and families often find themselves purchasing food that is processed and sometimes unhealthy.
