Who were the ancient Egyptians? They were an ancient people that we know a lot about, but there are still many mysteries about them. The part of their lives that always caught my attention was how they lived. The regular people of ancient Egypt lived in simple houses, and were always honoring their polytheistic religion of goddesses and gods. When their pharaoh ordered a pyramid built, each family was required to contribute, either with a laborer, or food. The everyday people completely accepted what their pharaoh told them because the pharaoh was considered a living god or goddess, a child of Re. That just goes to show how large a role their religion played in ancient Egypt. The ancient Egyptian writing was called hieroglyphics, and the scribes were the only ones besides royalty that knew how to read and write, which made them very important. These prominent figures kept business records, and wrote important documents for the kingdom. The first breakthrough we made in understanding hieroglyphics was finding the Rosetta Stone.
