The True Portrayal of Alcoholism
Sherman Alexie written a novel about a boy’s journey as a Native American living on a reservation in the book, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. One may think the addiction may not be as prominent in there society due to how Native Americans are usually perceived, such as free, family oriented, and caring spirit. However, Sherman Alexie tells a more in depth relationship that Native Americans and Alcohol share. Sherman Alexie did receive some bad criticism for stating this alcoholism amongst Native Americans. Overall, I believe Sherman Alexie publicized the truth about alcoholism amongst his community by stating his personal experience which can be back up by statistical facts.

Junior is surround by alcoholism everywhere on the reservation which ultimately makes and impact on his life. One important relationship that was demolished by alcohol was with his grandmother. Junior grandmother lived with his family, his family was very close with one another in a sense. Junior went to his grandmother for advice and his struggles with adjusting to life in a new school environment. Junior grandmother abruptly died while walking and ultimately being stricken by a car due to a drunk driver. Not only did Junior’s grandmother die fatally die due to an alcohol but so did his sister and his dad’s best friend Eugene. In one year span Junior lost three people who had very close relationships with. In relation to Sherman Alexie, he actually lost seven close in one year time span due to
