Science explains many of the things in today’s world that, just decades or centuries ago, were complete mysteries. One of the things science has made clear is the fact that sexuality is very biologically based and driven. While this is truthful, it is not one hundred percent accurate. Sexuality is biologically based, yes, but it is shaped by society.
Biology defines sex as the way humans reproduce. Sociology takes this definition and furthers it by adding that, while it is how humans repopulate the earth, reproduction is not always the main influence for sex. This can be proven by simply stating that sex is not performed the same way all around the world. What is deviant is decided by the norms and values of a society, and their view on what is wrong or right. Each culture judges sexuality differently, and things such as religion, age, gender, race, etc… all come in to play. Only variations of one norm is present in every society, and that is the Incest Taboo, because it prevents more than one major issue from occurring from a sexual relationship between family members. Aside from that, sexual deviance, or deviance in general, is diverse. In the U.S., sexuality amongst teenagers is frowned upon, but in other countries it is common for people to be married with children by the time they’re 18. In past years in the U.S., it was expected of girls to remain virgins until marriage, and they were harshly judged if they didn’t. Now, though, women are equal with men in this aspect. Homosexuality is deviant in many societies, often times due to religious groups with a lot of power within these societies, but it is legal in the U.S. All of these examples show that the way people judge certain things or certain acts varies from place to
