In the human body, the most abundant steroids are dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and its sulfate ester (DHEAS). DHEA is synthesized from cholesterol mainly in the adrenal glands but also by the brain, the testis, the ovaries, and the skin (Davis et al., 2011; Zouboulis, et al., 2007). DHEA is sulfated into its more stable sulfate ester DHEAS in the adrenal zona reticularis, which is catalyzed by the enzyme hydroxysteroid sulfotransferases (HST or SULT2A1) commonly referred to as DHEA sulfotransferase. DHEAS is thereafter converted in tissues back into DHEA by steroid sulfatase (STS) (Davis et al., 2011; Legrain et al., 2000).
