In some ways red represents passion, and maybe not in the best way. When Myrtle was killed, George Wilson was infuriated but also devastated. There is no way to classify exactly what he was feeling, but he was for sure passionate about the situation and wanted to make sure his wife received justice. When he kills Gatsby it is not out of anger or sadness, but passion, and red is used to describe the aftermath. A mattress floated in the water and leaves surrounded the body, “tracing, like the leg of compass, a thin red circle in the water.”…

A final flower inspired image of Daisy appears in her flashback to her original romance with Gatsby. In an exquisite romantic moment the two shared an impactful kiss in which Daisy, “blossomed for him like a flower and the incarnation was complete” (Fitzgerald 111). All throughout, Fitzgerald uses colors such as green, grey, white, and yellow. With the color green, the first thing to come to mind for this novel is the light that Gatsby outreaches for at the end of Daisy’s dock. “Involuntarily I glanced seaward - and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock” (Fitzgerald 169). Gatsby’s dream and pursuit is to be with Daisy but by the end of the novel it is not achieved. Another color in this novel is gray, which is closely associated with the Valley of Ashes, and the Wilsons.…

But the theme that stood out the most was the American Dream, and the division between the newly and formerly rich. The Great Gatsby tells you a story about how it was to live in the 1920s, in a flourishing country called The United States. However, there was a clear distinction between the different social classes called “old money” and “new money”.…

The different variations of the color yellow were by far the most prominent and recurring symbols in The Great Gatsby. In the novel, gold was a common theme, seen on objects ranging from clothing to vehicles or even characters, themselves. Often, when gold is mentioned in literature, it is traced back to its original form: currency. Dating far back into history, gold has been used as trade and represents wealth and riches.
