I feel that Steinbeck did not develop each character to his or her fullest potential. I feel this way because some of the character that were in the story didn’t really have a strong impact or relevance. Each character is meant to have an impact on the story and I believe that the only characters who had an impact on the story were: George, Lennie, Curley, Candy, and Curley’s wife, which is not a good thing because there were more characters. However, even though I say that they had a huge impact, most of them did, but it didn’t last very long such as: Crooks and Curley, in my opinion. Apart from their impact, they also represented certain things. I feel that Steinbeck did a really good job in this area because, like I have stated before in a previous paragraph, they symbolized and represented many things. Each characters’ representation of the story was the only thing (in my opinion) that help create any actual impact. The way each character represented something was a beautiful touch to the story. Their representation was what really gave the characters any sort of personality to them. Steinbeck did a really good job at giving each character something to represent. A third and final thing that I would like to touch on would be the dialogue of each character. Most of the characters talked in a way that seemed like they were from the south and also pretty uneducated. There were only two character, I believe, that talked in an educated and well-mannered way. Crooks and Curley’s wife were the only two that talked like educated people. Crooks’ dialogue was really well written because he spends most of his time reading books which would seem to be the reason why he can speak very well. Curley’s wife is well spoken because she wanted to be an actress or somebody famous before meeting Curley. To reach these goals she had to be well educated and very beautiful. This can
