Networking is a huge part when it comes to the professional world, and getting a name out there will be a major benefit after graduation. For example, a college student, Brittney Harris, who interned at NBC, CBS, and Kurtis productions in Chicago explains how her work in one internship lead to a part-time paid position with the same company while she was still in school. Harris says, “the experience you gain is indescribable…. It’s also a great way to network. I have heard of interns eventually getting hired on to staff after they have completed college” (Halperin 589). This shows that in many cases, having an internship almost guarantees a job offering after graduation. However, some people may argue against this statement with the point that internships could potentially ruin opportunity in the professional world if a student makes a mistake while working, but employers have internships for the specific intent of students making mistakes. It is better for the students to learn from their mistakes during an internship when they are under supervision rather than when they are placed on their own in the field.
Summer internships provide students with an invaluable educational opportunity while receiving college credit, getting different experiences within their field of study, and forming professional contacts.
