Sonny’s Blues by James Baldwin is a story about relationships between two brothers from African-American community in Harlem. They both, the narrator and Sonny, grew up among drugs and poverty. Two brothers thought this background will be following them till the rest of their lives. That is why they both wanted to escape from it, just had different ways of doing it. The older brother has made his way to the middle class by becoming an algebra teacher. On the other side, Sonny has picked a different path and was arrested after some time. Many would think that Sonny is just another criminal from Harlem. This is the problem that African-Americans have been facing for decades.
