Summary Of Hawkmoth Brains

In “Hawkmoth Brains Slow Down in Order to See at Night,” the scientists involved in studying moth feeding behavior knew that moths had a special mechanism to help them see in low light conditions since they come out to feed at dusk and dawn. However, these scientists also suggested that in addition to a mechanism that helps the moths see in darker environments, that perhaps the moths were controlling their nervous systems to help maximize their ability to see in low light conditions. The scientists used an infrared camera and robotic oscillating flower to test their theory. The infrared camera was used to track the moths flying pattern while using the printed, robotic flower to mimic the flowers natural movement in the wind. In nature, the

Summary: In the article “Brainology”, Dweck talk about two types of attitudes or mindsets. The two types are a growth mindset and a fixed mindset. Students with a growth mindset tended to get up again from setbacks and continuously improve academically with added effort, while those with a fixed mindset had a mindset that their abilities is what they are stuck with, they are afraid to further challenge themselves; due to belief that they aren't capable. Dweck had concluded that praising one without any acknowledgement of effort tended to create a fixed mindset while those praised for hard work or effort were more likely to not only feel more confident but still kept trying even if a task was a challenge, making these qualities a growth mindset,…

ambient light is significant. However, there are only 8 trials for these results so these results are not as accurate as the data that comes from the all trials from all the classes put together, which were 197. From these results the null hypothesis is rejected the experimental hypothesis is supported since the p-value was 0.314, which is much more that 0.05. This proves that the difference in average metabolic rate of goldfish in dark versus ambient light is not significant. The whole class results from all trials gives a better idea about whether metabolism of goldfish is effected when in normal light or in the dark.…

We put the sowbugs in a clear, plastic box and then we set our light source, which was a lamp, different distances away from the box. Then, we observed the sowbugs and collected data. We concluded that the sowbugs get farther away from the light as the lamp is closer to them since we can see in the graph from Presentation of Processed Data that when the lamp was 10 centimeters away from the box, the sowbugs got the farthest…

This is done through the shivering of their flight muscles, this is done to generate internal heat, providing the necessary heat levels to fly in cold conditions allowing the arctic bees to be able to fly earlier in seasons allowing for more nectar to be provided for the bee colony Bumblebees also have an adapted proboscis. The proboscis acts as a straw mechanism for collecting nectar, This is done through the unfurling of the long tongue which allows the proboscis dipped into a flower to reach the desired nectar within. The proboscis is hollow and sucks up the desired nectar within the flower. Bumblebees also possess the behavioural adaption of following and listening to their parents in order to gain knowledge on pollination, honey collecting, nectar consumption and colony functionally all of which is essential to survival. Bumblebees can also be seen using a dance language known as a “waggle dance” these dance communications are used to indicate the vicinity of food in the area.…

I will compare the performance of people with intact brains with the performance of so-called split-brain patients. In many ways, the brains of these two groups are very similar. 1 a. For example, the brainstem exists at the base of the brain connecting the brain and spinal cord and has no functional differences between an intact and split brain patient.…

PHI 1000 Fall 2016 Prof. Drain Essay #2 Thoughts on Thought After examining the several angles to the issue of animal cognition, it is my conclusion that non-human animals are in fact capable of thought. Although humans certainly display a superior cognitive ability, I believe the cognition of animals is not of an entirely different type, and that whatever difference remains is simply one of degree. While Davidson and Descartes tend to argue that language is a necessary component for rational creatures, Hobbes and Searle give non-human creatures more “cognitive credit,” citing their ability perceive, and to have and correct beliefs, as proof of being conscious, thinking, beings. Pointing to the immense biological similarities between humans…

Pollinators, flowers, and their relationship play an essential role in ecosystems. Pollinators are responsible for facilitating fertilization in flowering plants, which provides seed production in fruits and vegetables. Pollination is important in agricultural communities with the fertilization of crops. It is estimated that pollinators contribute to the global economy by adding 217 billion dollars from pollinating a vast array of crops (Gallai et al., 2009). The pollinator-flower relationship also helps in water filtration, flood and erosion management, wildlife support, and carbon sequestration (Pharo and Daily, 1998).…

We are incapable to precisely conceive the idea of being a bat. We can point out the physical aspects of bat life, but we cannot point out the bat experience. According to Nagel, the conscious experience can occur at many levels of animal life. However, there is no evidence to provide assurance that it is present in simpler organisms [i.e bats] (436). If an organism experience and/or feel pain then that organism have a conscious.…
