Both genders are susceptible to suicide but the methods of which suicide is carried out differ. According to Martin he found a study done by the CDC found that males are more successful at taking their own life. This is mainly due to the fact that males are more likely to use firearms while females are more likely to poison themselves. A study done by the CDC found that males are 50 to 60 percent more likely to use a firearm than a female. As a criminal justice major at Husson University I have learned that the reason for this is because females are more concerned about how the look after they die, and to them the use of a firearm is too messy. Some of these include mental illness and substance abuse. Martian mentions facts that where obtained by (SAMHSA,2006) these facts are that 33% of suicides involve alcohol, 28% has the use of drugs like cocaine, 58% of suicides involve psychotropic medications. As we learned in class depression is also a major factor when it comes to suicide, Martin mentions that a family history of suicide, having impulsive behaviors and experiencing hopelessness behavior have a increase risk of suicide attempts. Also according to Martin some other risk factors of suicide that can effect both military personal and civilians include exposure to one or many stressful events, having a intimate relationship fail and people who have suffered traumatic brain injury have an increased risk of suicidal behavior. PTSD and bullying According to Martian there is a link to untreated PTSD and suicidal behavior. “ 20% of those suffering from PTSD report at least one suicide attempt”. They both can suffer from PTSD, both parties can be effected by the abuse of drugs and alcohol. Also the age groups that are at risk of committing suicide in civilians are the same for military personnel. Both groups can be effected by mental illness, and the methods of suicide are similar between the both groups. Some of the differences between the two groups is that military personnel can be more at risk of developing mental illness due to the increased risk of exposure to traumatic events.
