The most common question constantly asked is "why?" Why did the parent, spouse, child, friend, or sibling take their own life? Even if the victim leaves a note explaining the reasons, lingering questions still remain: yes, they felt troubled enough to die, but why did they feel that? Often times, when a person commits suicide, the people they left behind is left in surprise and shock (Psychology Today). People who have survived suicide attempts have reported wanting not so much to die at to stop living. "If there was some sort of in-between state existed, some other alternative death, many suicidal people would take it in an instant" (Psychology Today). In general, there 's six reasons total for why people attempt to kill themselves. The first one is they 're depressed. Without a question, this is the most common reason people commit suicide. "The pain of existence often becomes too much for severely depressed people to bear" (Lickerman). The state of depression alters their thinking, allowing ideas like "Everyone would be better off without me". Often with people dealing with depression silently, are more than likely already planning suicide without anyone knowing it. The second reason is they 're psychotic. Inner voices will often command self-destruction for unknown reasons. "Schizophrenics are just as likely to talk freely about the voices commanding to kill themselves as not." (Lickerman) Schizophrenics will more than likely give honest answers about thoughts of suicide when asked directly. Thirdly is they 're impulsive. Often when people are stuck in drugs and alcohol, more often times than others, they become impulsive and take their own lives (Psychology Today). The remorse one often gets is genuine, but telling whether they 're going to try and take their lives again is unpredictable. They could continue to try again once they 're drunk or high again. The fourth reason is they 're crying out for help. Most often, these people don 't want to actually die they just want to alert the ones surrounding them that something is wrong. They believe they don 't want to die, so they 'll try methods they believe won 't kill them, striking out at someone who has hurt them. The fifth reason is they have a desire to die. The decision to commit suicide is based on a reasoned decision, usually based on the presence of a life threatening illness. "These people aren 't depressed, psychotic, or crying out for help. They 're trying to take control of their destiny and stop the suffering, which usually can be done by death" (Lickerman). There 's six stages of suicide, the first being attempted suicide. Suicide attempts that don 't end successfully, leading suicide attempts to out number completed suicides. Attempts of suicide often means a cry out for help. In many situations, unsuccessful suicide attempts are carried out in a manner that makes rescue possible (Life). Next, there 's suicidal gestures. Gestures could be anything from reckless driving or any other odd behavior like standing on the edge of a bridge. There could also be self-inflicted injuries like cutting of the wrist with a dull object and/or head banging. (Life) Repeated statements could be a gesture. Those statements could be "I 'm so depressed that I don 't want to live anymore." Or "No one will care if I 'm gone!" The third stage is parasuicide. Parasuicide is usually an episode of deliberate self-harm that is survived. With the fourth and fifth stage, they almost tie in together. Fourth is those who wish to die but don 't succeed. The fifth is those who have the thoughts of dying, but simply don 't try anything. (Life) The sixth and final step is the survivors of suicide. Usually those left behind after a suicide
