Improved Essays
To be sincere I feel a little nervous getting into preceptorship, the final step of practice in the nursing program; especially that I will be without my fellow students to work with, share experiences and support each other. On the other hand, I am looking forward to the experience as this will challenge me to work independently, critically think through situations and enhance my ability to implement appropriate interventions and increase confidence in my practice. I am thankful to the knowledgeable nurse on unit 29, who showed professionalism in their practice and worked as a team to meet patients’ health care demands/needs. I was challenged to take responsibility for my own learning and productivity by being more critical and attentive to every detail. I feel more prepared mentally and physically on how to respond to certain situations and not to take things for granted. I will take extra steps to looks at the policy and procedures before embarking on any skills to prevent putting my patients at risk and thrive to be that ‘knowledgeable and compassionate nurse’. …show more content…

The nursing profession is fortunate enough to hold an immeasurable amount of the public’s trust during their most vulnerable moments, in the hope of receiving optimal client centred care. A recent survey discovered that nurses are second to firefighters in a list of most trusted occupations (CNA, 2007). Moreover, nurses have the privilege of being in a self-regulated and self-governed profession. This means that the Canadian government believes that Ontario’s nursing regulatory body, College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO), is best qualified to appropriately define its own members’ norms of practice and boundaries (Schiller, 2014). It is incumbent upon nurses to continuously justify that they are deserving of this honour by delivering uncompromised…

The initial encounter with my nursing educator preceptor was an interview to get myself acclimatized to first and foremost her nature and qualities as a person and as an educator, as I moved on with the interview and assessed her in both roles, I realized that is the kind of person I would like to be as a nurse educator. It was a positive interview and to see her in action, because not only is she firm with her students, she also takes into account the student’s emotional welfare and home situations into consideration. This interview afforded me the chance to see firsthand a role model of a nurse educator, and observe the behaviors and attitudes of someone that I admires and eventually adopt those behaviors or attitudes as I assume my role…
