In the article “A Decade of Fear” Sam Robert explains how McCarthyism turned Americans against each other in the decade after World War II by creating fear on every single one of them, because they were either involved with Communism or knew someone who was. According to Robert “screenwriters, actors, directors, and producers were dragged before the House Un-American Activities Committee and asked to “name names” of colleagues who had Communist ties or sympathies” (par. 13). In other words, men and women were asked to expose friends and/or family who was associated with the practice of Communism. As a matter of fact, society did not really have a choice at that time, because the government was callous and did not care about their rebuttals.…

American essayist Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote, “Fear defeats more people than any other one thing in the world.” Fear can be caused by many things and become many things, but the type of fear that causes people to stay quiet or even lie can be particularly devastating. A real life example of this fear could be as simple as a thief blaming their thievery on someone else; however, an extreme example of this devastation can be shown in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, where fear led an entire city to kill several of their own innocent people. Even though this story is technically historical fiction, it still provides fantastic scenarios of how fear defeats people. In act one a group of girls accused several people of witchcraft because they feared…
“Death is the cause or occasion of loss of life” (Merriam-Webster Dictionary). The majority of people fears death. Some are afraid of what is there after death; some are afraid of the act of dying itself. Even the most devout believer can fear death because it is more of a universal fear – one that is hardwired to our minds. Some say that this fear follows from the fear of life but that is not the only cause why most of us fear death so much as to affect our daily lives.…
“By blocking the action of adrenaline and other substances, these drugs mute the sympathetic nervous system, which produces fear in response to any perceived danger, be it a sabre-toothed tiger or a Lincoln Center audience,” says Tindall, an oboist, performer, and journalist. Stage fright is a widespread issue that many musicians face. It can both physically and mentally paralyze you, affecting the quality of each performance you give. There is no one specific cause to stage fright — some say it happens from insecurity and under-preparation, while others believe it has to do with playing from memory or being in front of a scrutinizing audience (Smith). Regardless, one of the biggest questions we all ask is what can we do about it?…

Introduction Neural circuits which are involved in fear/threat learning and emotional memory have been studied in various ways including human subjects and laboratory animals. We will first discuss the basic circuits involved in fear conditioning and emotional memory learning. After that, two specific systems – norepinephrine (NE) projections from locus coeruleus (LC) and serotonin (5-HT) projections from dorsal raphe nuclei (DR) – and its effects on threat learning and fear conditioning will be discussed. Locus Coeruleus and its projections to other regions involved in threat learning The locus coeruleus (LC) is the largest nucleus of noradrenergic neurons in the central nervous system and is located in the pons. The excitation of…
In a mental health setting, stress refers to a person feeling that they are not able to deal with the situation with which they are faced (Mindful Employer 2011). A small amount of stress, often called pressure, can be helpful to increase motivation and production, and produce a feeling of achievement when a task is completed. However, extreme stress may impair a person’s decision making and their ability to carry out normal chores, and may even cause emotional or physical symptoms such as anger, despair, stiff muscles, or frequent headaches (Department of Labour and Occupational Safety and Health 2003). Excessive stress may also contribute to or worsen mental health problems such as anxiety or depression (Department of Labour and Occupational Safety and Health 2003;…
