What is a sport? If you look it up in a dictionary it is defined as “An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively.” For me sports is so much more than that. Sport is dedication, determination, teamwork and self discipline, for me sports is life.
I guess that if asked I would consider myself athletic, I’ve participated in sports for most of my life. I think that the first sport that I ever tried was downhill skiing, I was 2 ½ years old at that time. After that I’ve skied every single winter of my life. I’ve also tried gymnastics, circus school, soccer, softball, basketball, handball, swimming...I think you get the idea. I think that it was the idea of doing something that scared me, the idea of a team of 20 or more individuals becoming one, the idea of doing something not only for you but for your teammates that are more like sisters than teammates, the idea of doing something amazing that few are able to do. That’s probably the main reason as to why I become annoyed when someone says that cheerleading isn’t a sport. Even though according to the definition of a sport it most definitely is as well as according to every single cheerleader. I would love to see all the haters try performing a cheerleading routine. Honestly maybe cheer isn’t a sport..it’s so much more than that, it’s a way of life, a way of thinking, it is life.
I am forever thankful for sports, they’re such a huge part of my life and even though cheerleading is my favorite sport I take any chance to learn and participate in a new sport.
